Dental Fillings

For patients with tooth decay and cavities, dental fillings are the ultimate tooth-restoration solution. Dental fillings also prevent bacteria from invading the teeth and causing additional oral complications.

How Does the Dental Filling Procedure Happen?

A tooth filling treatment at Sunwest Dental lasts between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on the necessary dental work. Dr. Gill or Dr. Rea prepares the area by using a local anesthetic to prevent pain and discomfort during cavity fillings.

Once the area is numb, the dentist removes tooth decay using a drill and thoroughly cleans the affected area.

Types of Dental Fillings

There are numerous materials used for filling cavities. They vary in color and strength.

  • Composite resins – Composite fillings are suitable for small restorations, are natural-looking, and last about 3 to 10 years. These are the most common.
  • Porcelain – Durable, comfortable, and less likely to show tooth stains.
  • Metal – Sturdy and can last from 10 to 15 years.
  • Amalgam – Durable, affordable, and dark colored. Ideal for filling cavities in the molars (teeth in the back of the mouth).
  • Glass ionomer – Less durable than other tooth filling options. These can last from 4 to 6 years.
  • Gold — These can last over 20 years. They are made in a lab and cemented into the tooth.
